I've tried several over the years, and am really pleased with Hide My Ass, or HMA for short. It's not free, but there is both a Mac and iOS app. The iOS app is excellent, the mac app is a bit of a mess but of course in both cases, you can configure all the VPN connections you want to use manually. They have nodes in many countries, meaning you can use it to access geo-blocked content, for example audio described BBC content in the UK if you are not in the UK.
