Hi Matt,

The other thing to point out (and apologies if you or your student know this
already) is that you can’t actually get to Google Docs directly by expanding
the Apps link on the Google web page. You have to go into Google Drive first,
and either open an existing document or click on the New button, which opens a
menu where you can choose to start a new Google Docs document.

Cheers,

Ed

Hi matt,

You can just about use VO and Safari to compose and read Google Docs. There
are some fairly annoying issues (at least on my system), E.G. when you navigate
by whatever textual unit, you get the sound you get when you try to navigate
passed the top or bottom of a web page. By default, you’ll also have each
character spoken regardless of your key echo setting. You can bizarrely stop
this by turning on braille support in Google Docs, you don’t need to have a
braille display.

Generally speaking, for whichever Google App you want to use with Safari, you
should turn off quick nav, disregard most of the quick keys you’re used to
using to navigate HTML documents in Safari and use Google shortcuts. This also
applies under Windows if you ever use that environment.

Cheers,

Ed

Last I heard Google favors using their own Chrome browser with ChromeVox with
Google docs. Of course that means, essentially, using two screen readers to get
stuff done which I consider a non-starter.

While I don't use them, Google did give a mention to improved accessibility for
VO users on iOS in their announcements.

If you’re blind or have low vision, we have improved support and performance
for TalkBack on Android and VoiceOver on iOS to create, edit, and share files
in Docs, Sheets and Slides. The updated apps also respond well to screen
magnification, in case you need to zoom in for a closer look."
