Here is what I do:
1. Press control-F2 to open the menu bar. Note this is a Mac Os X shortcut not 
a VO one.
2. Down arrow from the Apple menu to open it.
3. Press return on "About This Mac".
4. Tab to and press space on "Software Update" button.
5. The App Store opens to updates.
