As far as I am aware, it does not matter as long as what you have is a fitbit product. I have the basic fitbit and sometimes the distance is not as reliable, I think, as I would like. But the app is really a help as it allows you to read the fitbit, (if you need that), and tells you among other things if the battery is low. I still have mine attached to me even when I am not exercising as it always counts your steps.
