I did a permissions repair from the recovery partition, but still the same

another quirky thing is that hitting spacebar doesn’t always start and stop 
playback depending on what is in the VO cursor. that is, sometimes it checks 
and unchecked boxes etc. Hitting tab several times eventually gets it working.
Any help appreciated
