Many thanks 
I deleted and re-installed - an older version of the app and then upgraded 
again to the latest version of the app which seemed to have sorted it. Oddly 
there were some unlabelled buttons which I do not remember encountering before 
but they all had help tags so I was able to quickly assign labels  to them.

However the main thing is  that it is no longer saying VLC has no windows and I 
can again see all the normal playlist tables etc.
