Hello Christina,

It sounds as though you have the preview pane visible. This means that when you 
navigate to a message, it opens automatically, so you never see an unread 
message. This is why I always disable the preview pane.

If you read your messages by doing VO-j to get to the body, you have the 
preview pane visible.
