My personal solution for this is to do it in two steps: 1. Press CMD + n to open a real new window. 2. press the hotkey for the desired folder like CMD + Shift + o to open documents folder, CMD + Shift + h to open the home folder, and so forth.
Now I'm able to switch between these windows by pressing CMD + < or close one window after another by pressing CMD + w. Maybe a work around for you as well.
