This was definitely a problem before 10.10.3; it’s clearly much more pronounced 
now though, for whatever reason.

Another workaround: mark all mail read; seems to make navigation possible 
always.  Of course, it also completely ****s up your read/unread status, which 
actually makes it worthwhile going back to using the preview pane.  Oh dear.

I confess to having tested 10.10.3.  I’m afraid I merely tolerated the problem, 
instead of reporting it as I should have done.  Or perhaps it is just that I 
never jotted down what I wanted to report, and was tired by Friday.  It is now 
on my list, alongside several other prominent bugs, and a couple of angry 
tirades which I will not share on the list or with Apple at this time.
