Hello, Recently we had a short discussion regarding problems resulting after the system volume gets turned to 0 and a VO user attempts to log in using FileVault.
Here’s the response from Apple Accessibility. I truly appreciate the info and I am posting it because it helps someone else. Also, I want to thank everyone who responded to my question regarding this subject. Here’s Apple’sAccessibility’s response. From: Apple Accessibility <[email protected]> Subject: [510364] Volume Level for VoiceOver users while using FileVault or Recovery Concerns Date: April 14, 2015 at 9:29:38 AM PDT To: [email protected] Reply-To: Apple Accessibility <[email protected]> Hello, Thank you for your email. Starting with Mac OS X 10.10 Yosemite File Vault now uses whole disk encryption. So when you boot the system up the actually OS hasn't loaded yet. We have an article discussing VoiceOver and File vault at this link. https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT203986 VoiceOver has very limited capabilities at this point and in fact there is no way adjust volume settings because the OS has still not been loaded into memory. Volume settings are stored in PRAM (Parameter Ram also known as none volatile RAM) so they are maintained across boot sequences. In the situation you describe you can reset the volume settings to defaults by resetting Pram. Here's a link describing how to reset your computers PRAM. https://support.apple.com/kb/PH18761?locale=en_US. Should you find yourself in the situation where you believe you are at the log in screen and there is no sound when pressing command + f5 you should be able to shutdown the computer by holding down the power button for approximately 6 - 10 seconds. You should then be able to reset PRAM as described above.
