Hello,

Here is my comparison between Ootunes and TuneIn. Ootunes has not been updated
since May 2011, so while it is a great app, a few bugs are starting to crop up.
For instance, there is a bug in iOS 7 and up where you can’t save a recording
permanently unless you do so before the recording stops. Otherwise, the
recording is only saved in a temporary cache and eventually gets deleted. On
the other hand, TuneIn doesn’t record automatically at all; you have to hit a
record button manually. For me, TuneIn has crashed a lot when trying to record
some streams, in some cases requiring a reinstall of the app to get it to open
again. Ootunes isn’t optimized for the iPhone 5 and newer, though that is not a
huge deal. Ootunes also doesn't handle a loss of connection as gracefully as
TuneIn does. With TuneIn, if the connection drops for whatever reason, you’ll
lose a few seconds of audio but you can continue to pause and rewind the stream
as though nothing happened, and if you’re recording it, it’ll keep recording
and will still show up as one segment. With Ootunes, this is not the case. If
the connection drops, you’ll be starting an entirely new playback “session”, if
that makes sense, and will lose any audio that’s been buffered.

TuneIn tries to maintain a directory of station schedules in addition to the
stations themselves. So, for example, if you’re looking for a syndicated show,
you can search for the name of the show in TuneIn’s directory and get back a
list of which stations carry that show, and when it is scheduled to air. This
directory is far from complete. Ootunes’ directory doesn’t contain station
schedules, but is quite a bit more extensive when it comes to stations. TuneIn
sometimes removes streams upon request (e.g. if a publisher has written their
own app that they would rather have you use to play their content). Ootunes
seems to be quite a bit more liberal about retaining these streams in their
database.

Both apps allow you to add your own streams by manually entering their URLs.
TuneIn lets you create an account so you can have the same favourites and so
forth on all your devices where you use TuneIn. Both apps let you set an alarm
to wake up with music, but TuneIn requires that your screen be unlocked for
such an alarm to sound. Ootunes doesn’t require the screen to be unlocked,
though its alarms don’t always function perfectly either.

Ultimately, I prefer Ootunes due to its easy to use interface and less of a
history with inaccessible controls. However, some updates to smooth out some of
the bugs would be welcome.
