If I may, I’d like to offer another solution presented in this thread.

As some of you may know, the first column in the “Messages Table” is a 
“Disclosure Triangle.”  If you focus on that field in any given line, selecting 
the right arrow (>) will expand the thread so each message in the line appears 
as a “stand alone” message — still sorted according to the conversation 
parameter.  The one problem here is that I don’t know of any way to recognize 
an “unopened thread” as such.  But if you suspect a mubject to be one of a 
number of messages in a thread, selecting “>” in the “Disclosure Triangle” will 
expand that particular thread.

Conversely, should you choose to delete an entire thread in one fell swoop, 
simply use the “<“ character on the Disclosure Triangle” to contract all 
messages in that into a single entry in the table and then <COMMAND>+<DELETE> 
will get that job done.
