Hi, I was at the Open Source Accessibility Conference in Toronto Tuesday through Thursday and I'm now in Baltimore for the ACB Mid-Atlantic convention and will go home on Sunday. Thus, I haven't been able to read this study yet so I do not know how they gathered the information, hence, cannot speak to how it correlates with other recents studies on the same topic.
The JAWS and Window-Eyes numbers are very similar to what we've been seeing for a few years but the VO number is about 4 times higher than I've eer seen it. Most, if not all previous surveys on At usage had a bias against VO because it isn't taught in too many training centers or other groups which were the groups studied. If, indeed, this survey did a similar population, then the 9% VO number is probably skewed downward which would suggest that it has made greater inroads than previously thought. No one has been able to quantify just how many of the millions of Macs sold since they started including VO as they aren't working through any"normal" blindness channels. Previously, no one knew how to contact these people so they were never counted. This study may include those unheard people and the results may better reflect actual usage. Or, it might just be a weird anomoly that may fall out in future studies. Still on coffee number one. cdh On Oct 30, 2009, at 12:40 PM, James & Nash wrote: > > That's because VO is an up and coming screen reader smile > ----- Original Message ----- > From: "Chris Blouch" <[email protected]> > To: "MacVisionaries" <[email protected]> > Sent: Friday, October 30, 2009 4:27 PM > Subject: WebAIM screen reader user survey results > > >> >> An interesting study breaking down a number of results ranging from >> usability of flash, screen readers in use, social media and much >> more. >> >> http://webaim.org/projects/screenreadersurvey2/ >> >> Interesting that VO is 9% on this survey, only slightly behind >> WindowEyes at 10%.
