Firstly, those videos are wrong. You never ever should eat a mike unless you're looking for a real muddy sound with nothing but low ends, and basically lots of clipping. Yeah, you can use a limiter, or a compressor, and maybe cut out some of it, and then use an EQ to roll off some of the mud, but even still, it's not going to sound very good. Depending on the effect you're looking for, generally with mikes like the snowball, etc. you want to be about 6 inches. Put your thumb on your bottom lip, then extend your other fingers out. Touch the tip of your pinky to your microphone, while still leaving the tip of your thumb on the same hand on your bottom lip. That's how I generally teach my students to start gaging it. OK, you may have to back off a little more, or come in a little bit more, but generally, that should get you in the ball park.

Chris.

I've mostly been recording acoustic instruments, so I get the mic right up to the sound hole, or the resonator, etc. certain demo videos on YouTube have suggested that you really got a "eat them like" to get a good clean sound.

Regarding the snowball, how then did you manage to get the thing close enough to your mouth? Did you use the stand that comes with it?

Yes I do, I use my MacBook air for the camera, and I have an external snowball blue Snowball microphone.

Brandon, currently I'm using the built in QuickTime app to do all my video recording. You can then just upload the video clips to YouTube from within the app if you desire. As far as an auto position and you in the frame, I'm sorry to say you can forget about that. I have a little bit of site and I always take a few test shots to see if I'm in the frame or not. If you can get some cited assistance they can help you get in the frame, and then you can remember to wear your position, distance from the computer height of your seat etc. That's how I do it.

Hi everyone,

A few questions. I’d like to record video to upload to Youtube. What’s the best application to use for this?

Secondly, on a more practical note, is there a way I can do this independently, and yet make sure it’s capturing my face, and not like the top of my head or something? I know it won’t be perfect, being blind, but would like to make it as good as possible. Any other recommendations would be appreciated as well.

Peace,
Brandon
