Hello Stacey, You have to do this for each type of file you want to edit with TextEdit. So, normally, RTF will open with TextEdit but DOC and DOCX will have to be changed.
Select a file of the type you wish to change and press Cmd-i to open the Information window. Interact with the scroll area. Press VO-i for the Item Chooser and type the letters “op” to find Open with. If the disclosure triangle is collapsed, press VO-Space to expand it. Navigate right once and press VO-Space on the menu button. Type the letters “te” for TexteEdit then press Return. Navigate right to Use this application to open all documents like this one and continue right to the button. If the button is dimmed, you’ll need to go to the end of the window to unlock the padlock which requires you to type in your admin password.
