Erik: I love this story, but, I am wondering if either you just got someone who went the extra mile for you, or, things have changed dramatically.
I just bought an apple care plan for my mini, and, they were vary definite in pointing out that they wouldn't repair or replace the unit if the damage was due to negligence on my part. Although you didn't pore that Greece on your machine on purpose, it would certainly go down as negligence. However, it's a touching story, and possibly,Apple's policy is to do the repairs if it was an accident, however, the contract I read certainly made it clear that it wasn't.
