Open it--it's a DMG file--and you get a new folder. In there you'll find
Skype.app. Cmd-c to copy it, cmd-shift-a to open your Applications folder,
cmd-v to paste. It's now installed. Technically, you don't need to even put it
in the Applications folder, but it works better if you do simply because it
keeps things organized and in a known, central place.

As to downloading, you can check if a download is working by pressing
cmd-option-l. This opens a popover with a table of all current and recent
downloads, as groups. Interact with the table, then with the group holding the
download you're wondering about, and you can see download status, speed, and so
on. If you don't see your download n the table, it hasn't started yet. Of
course, you can check your downloads folder in Finder (open it with the same
keystroke). If you find a file with a .download extension, that's a download in
progress. If you find he file with its normal extension, that's a completed
download. Currently, there's no way of getting a notification or sound when a
download completes, which is sad. Let me know if any of this doesn't make sense.
