I tend to agree, but casual users and newbies often get into trouble by 
installing apps, plugins, and add-ons that, while not viruses, are deeply 
annoying. Virus programs tend NOT to remove those, so your browser starts 
offering ads, pop-up, and search results that verge on the abusive.

As a long-time Mac user, I haven't had a virus program since before OS X. 
But I just removed MacKeeper and related nag-ware from a fairly intelligent 
friend's computer. It's just a little hard to describe what NOT to do, but 
the basic suggestion is to avoid downloading apps that aren't in the App 
store, and to apply all updates from the App store, but nowhere else. If 
you have a bit of a nerdy side, you can play around in the rough end of the 
Internet; otherwise, keep your lifejacket on, and don't buy programs that 
promise to protect you from viruses you won't get.
