Open the subfolder. Highlight the file. stop interacting to go to the ok button, or press enter to automatically activate the OK button. What is attached is whatever is highlighted in finder. I believe I use VO space rather than enter to open the subfolder, or I use right arrow. I sometimes need to expand the subfolder.
