Installing OS X Yosemite converted most volumes to core storage, so believe me 
when I say this situation impacted Yosemite as well. By far the simplest 
solution would be to wipe the disk, but as I say I understand why you would not 
want to do this. Have you tried booting from internet recovery as I suggested 
with COMMAND+OPTION+R? That seemed to reallocate the free space on my startup 
volume—and I have no idea why. Perhaps it has to do with tests that were 
performed on the hard disk, or with recreating the recovery partition.
