Hi! Unfortunately, VoiceOver performance in Terminal still remains lame after all the complaints about it. Apple's solution at the time was to implement a "Toggle text spoken" feature, which would prevent the VoiceOver cursor from moving and switching focus in applications like Terminal. This would mean that you could read the output manually, but the VOiceOVer cursor wouldn't move, thus preventing anything from being read automatically and moving the focus. To get to it, press VO-H-H, then enter spok and it is there.
It's a terrible solution, and shouldn't be necessary, but Apple hasn't sorted this out yet. Every time I bug it, that is what they tell me to use.
