If you are referring to things appearing on your unlock screen, go to settings, touch ID and passcode, and select what can be displayed on the lock screen.
If you are referring to the number of new items displayed when touching an app on the home screen, go to settings, notifications, and make sure badges are selected for the apps. I am using the latest iOS and this works well for me.
