I have several airplay enabled devices. I have a stereo upstairs with an airport express and the stereo downstairs with the same. We also have a second generation Apple TV. So there are plenty of devices to pick from. Maybe having to have a Bluetooth earpiece connected is the solution, but that is really really stupid. And why would it not require that on the iPad? Why would the iPhone be different from an iPad running the same OS?
