This is doable, yes, and I have done it myself while travelling.

The trick here is to employ FileVault.  FileVault password prompts appear when 
the machine has gone to standby or hibernation.  Turn off all prompting inside 
OS X, and set up FileVault.  Then adjust your energy preferences using System 
Preferences to never go to sleep, and set your hibernation mode to hibernate 
using the command line and pmset tool.  Alternatively, using the same tool, set 
the standby delay to something low enough that it will kick in, but high enough 
that your Mac can sleep safely.  I prefer the first option, even though it does 
mean it takes longer to sleep and wake from hibernation.  Be aware that doing 
this also kills any feature that depends on sleep, for example network 
availability or PowerNap.
