Seems like a piece where the author didn’t do homework. You can lock down the service to your own phones if you want or leave it open for anyone to use. There’s no risk in leaving it open other than using bandwidth which depends on how much bandwidth you have total whether you care or not. If you lock the device down then it will only work on your phones.
