Hi! Have you tried plugging in earbuds, like the ones from Apple?
That sometimes does the trick. My Mac doesn't speak either unless I plug those in, and I know people who've had to do this as well. Bryan's page claims it does not support USB audio, but I've also connected USB headsets to the installer in the past.
