File formats is one area where the IoS devices really fall over. As far as I know, the deal is that you can only play mp4 files, period. No avi, no .mov, no .mpeg,, and no streaming of authored DVD's.
Unfortunately, converting video formats is a very inexact science. The various formats all seem to handle video streaming so differently that preserving the aspect ratio and other atributes so that the video still looks good to the sighted eye is difficult to impossible and that really has to be taken into consideration when choosing a stream converter. Even if you found a high quality, accessible video converter, it could take almost as long as real time to make the conversion. You need to count on at least half of real time depending on your system, the software, and the source and destination formats. It's not undertaken lightly.
