I’m not sure how it’s restricted in terms of drive selection, but I can assure 
you that it only block erases CD-RW discs.  You can’t accidentally destroy 
filesystems on physical disks with it, for instance.

As for Unix, Terminal help actually does have a fairly nice selection of 
commands to be getting on with, but there are plenty of resources on the web 
for Unix.  Set up a second, regular user account on your Mac, then use it to 
have a good mess about in Terminal with the things you learn.  You can’t hurt 
anything, and you come away with information useful on Mac as well as other 
Unix-like systems, like Linux, for instance.  It’s a great skill to have.  I 
have Terminal on my dock, if that says anything. :)
