Thanks for the responses. I followed your instructions and it worked perfectly. Thinking that this might be the solution for my friend, I called him and listened as he tried to achieve the same result. No cigar!
I think that his Mac may be having some problems, because when he arrowed right, VO didn’t say a thing, though from time to time, it would say several letters with just one tap of the right-arrow key. Perhaps someone at the Apple store can clean it for him. I can’t think of anything else that would be causing this problem.
