It sounds like you are writing in English and your primary language is set to another language. You could add and into your spelling dictionary, or make sure that language is set correctly for your current session.
If you bring up the spell correction panel with command-shift-semiCola, there is a drop down called automatic by language, if you change this to English, then auto-correct will use English words.
