Well, my point was simply more that zipsplit generates split archives that are 
compatible with WinZip etc.  I think 7zip already knows how to “Combine” 
selected files, but the standard way to indicate split zip files, as indicated 
by the zip format itself, is with this zip 2.0 extension that zipsplit writes 
into the header of the file.  The last file contains the index of the parts, 
hence just cat isn’t enough.  In practice I think split and span are 
interchangeable because zip tools that don’t know an extension are obliged to 
ignore it.
