Hi all, The other day I discovered that I had lost permission to read the directory containing my Time Machine backups. I am not sure why as I am not aware of having done anything unusual that would have corrupted the permissions. I ran first aid on my hard drive, but this did not resolve the issue.
After researching this a bit on the internet, I decided that for a “quick fix” I would simply grant myself read and write permissions to the entire Time Machine directory via the Finder’s get info dialog under the sharing and permissions section. I added read/write permissions for myself but the permissions did not take. I did so again, this time applying these permissions to all contained items using the action popup menu. This worked and I’m now able to read the directory containing my Time Machine backups. However, I’m curious about a few things. Does anybody have any idea what may have been going on as to why I suddenly lost read/write permissions? Also, would it be best to simply format the drive or erase the backups directory so backups can proceed afresh, or should I let them continue for a while and see what happens? I don’t think I’d ever restore my entire system using a Time Machine backup; I’d probably only use it to replace individual files and folders. However, it’s interesting because I would now have permission to read and write every single file in the backup whereas this should not be the case. You would usually only have read-only permission for system directories. I could have probably applied more granular permissions to the items. Not sure if this will make any practical difference and I suspect that it won’t unless I did an entire system restore. Any thoughts or suggestions?
