Yes I tried setup in System Prefs. I didn't even get to setting it up once I hit the Add button, it just ran a test page or whatever it was. In the printer table it showed the Prolific controller which is the chlpset in the parallel to USB cable.

I looked at the information and it shows the Prolific controllers. One is a seruial and one is a IEE 1284 something ot other, think that is for the embosser.

On the other hand, surely it is only a matter of identifying the parallel or 
serial device that appears on OS X, assuming that the chipset is one supported 
by a USB driver.  In which case, I imagine one simply sends the ASCII braille 
file to the embosser much as it used to be.

What does OS X say your USB device really is.  Check in System Information 
under USB.  Check the detailed info in the pane once it’s selected.
