I can always tell what is Mp3 (even at its higher sampling rates) and what is
lossless. I do have an audiophile class stereo and listen mostly to classical
and jazz which often have wide dynamic ranges that the MP3 compression, quite
often, will turn into absolute mud.

MP3 is fine for an iPod, especially if you are using it in a noisy place. The
iPod/iPhone digital to analogue convertor (DAC) is remarkably good for anything
in their price range but a USB DAC attached to a Mac and one's stereo tend to
be dramatically better.

So, if the tests for the review you cite was done on an iPod or similar, the
difference between MP3 and lossless probably isn't that different. Also,
headphones, earbuds, etc. prevent "depth" from being presented as in an actual
stereo with the speakers pointing in the right direction for the room in which
you have it.
