Songs view is what iTunes now calls the tabular layout. Despite its aggravations, I find it to be the least annoying mode to work with, for all the usual reasons tables are awesome. Just tell iTunes to use list views by default in preferences, and sort using whatever columns you need.
Shame Apple can’t do iTunes without a proprietary database, using a client-server model, or using one’s own file and directory structure without the need of tags.
