Hi Donna,

I do this mostly with action type scenes such as our dogs and cats but for
interviews, such as what you are wanting to do, it can be much easier.

If you can, place your phone on a stand that allows it to be straight and
vertical. This may require propping it up and anchoring it on both sides.

For interviews, I’d do them in profile, the person in profile that is. Position
the camera to the side of you and the person forming sort of a triangle. People
get nervous looking into a camera lens. They will be much more natural looking
at you and telling their stories.
I would have someone check to make sure all of a person is in frame. You can
use a kitchen table as a nice setting. Try to eliminate as much exterior sound
as possible but keep the good things, like a clock and birds outside. If the
person has things to show you, like pictures or items, a favorite cup, spoon
collection, quilt, etc. then you play to the camera.

Unlike the iOS camera, the video doesn’t tell you if there are faces in the
shot. That’s why you will most likely need sighted help to position it exactly.

Good luck. It sounds like an interesting project. I’ve been wanting to do this
with my dad for a while now. You’ve just inspired me.
