The topics of the various cursors and navigating text are covered extensively in the getting started guide that comes built into every Mac. I suggest you read those pages and it will most likely answer all of your questions. In order to get to this you press VO with the letter H to bring up the voiceover help menu and at the bottom of the list you will find the getting started manual. This is basic information and it is covered extensively in that guide.
