Most of the “in-box” printer drivers are downloaded on demand now, and aren’t 
directly included with the OS.

First thing I’d do is to check the entire (often quite lengthy) menu of options 
in the pop-up list, when you first add the printer and before you actually 
press the Add button in that dialog.  Unless it supports AirPrint, the default 
selection should already be correct.  If it does support AirPrint, Apple were 
prefer it, even if it provides an inferior interface to the printer (true for 
multi-function like my own).  In that case look through the menu for the 
specific printer, which is often just underneath the default choice.  When you 
press Add, and only then, will it rush off to download the vendor’s driver 
package.
