If you have a mac book pro with optical drive then you should be able to go to 
16gig of ram, and if your really keen, an ssd drive makes it even faster again 
to start up.

 As for pricing, I'm not Canadian but 2 8 gb SODIM ddr3 1600MHz  shouldn't be 
overly costly for you, I know here in NZ it cost me around NZ 280 18 months ago 
to upgrade a machine of similar age.
Our pricing is a lot higher than what USA or Canadian pricing would be
