I remember having to work with this when I got a USB headset, try going to 
sound in the system preferences. It doesn't switch until you tell it to. Bad 
thing is, you can't actually switch back without the headset on. so if your 
batteries go dead, your stuck with USB sound as opposed to just unplugging it 
and hearing VO on the speakers.
