Actually, that has nothing to do with why the smaller phone was released. The real reason is because in the Indian and Chinese markets the 4 inch phone is king. Chinese and other far eastern customer blocks represent a much larger block of business than even the United States and European markets. You’re looking at almost 3 billion people between two countries. Apple isn’t going to try to fight cultural norms and sell a 6 inch phone to a 4 inch phone customer.
There’s a lot on CNBC today on this topic if it interests you on any level. Lots of concern over the fact Apple made this move and the target markets (China and India) are under economic stress so with the higher margins in the SE production and the declination in the far east markets Apple may have some real short term sales issues with the SE.
