Hello Jenine, This is a bit fiddly. In Safari, interact with the toolbar and find the "downloads' button. Activate it and find the table of downloads. interact again and you will be able to move through the downloads. Interact with the row that you are interested in and you should find the info on the progress there. That's the only way I have found to ascertain the progress.
Another way I deal with it is by enabling folder actions on my downloads folder so that when a download finishes, I'm notified of it by a dialog. To enable folder functions, find the downloads folder in your home folder, go to contextual menu with vo+shift+m and go down to the "services" item. Expand the item with right arrow key, and the first item in this submenu is "enable folder actions". Activate it and you will be able to decide how you want your folder actions to work.
