Wonder if an HDMI splitter would be in order. Then you don't have to
have your speakers dependent on behavior of your TV.

By reset it, I assume you mean the AppleTV. I know that did not help
with our old Apple TV too. I haven't tried it with this one, but since
it was set up from scratch just now, and then updated to the latest
tvOS, I'm not sure what resetting might do. Plus, since we tried it on
two different TVs, I'm thinking it's not the Apple device. It's either
the something with the optical out port or, more likely in my view,
something to do with the sound bar. And this isn't a cheap sound bar.
It's klipsch, so it should not be cheaply made or anything.

It’s interesting,
I have my apple tv gen 4 connected to my t via HDMI and then my tv
connected to my speakers through optical and I’m finding no issues
related to sound with either video tv music or just voiceover playing
I idnd’t have any issues with it regarding my apple tv 2 either.
Could it be a case of needing to reset it from scratch and see what
happens theren

I suspect you have this right. I have a Mac Mini hooked to a surround
sound receiver via the digital optical out and it always takes a
moment for the receiver to figure out what kind of signal is being
sent before it wakes up and starts putting sound out the speakers.
Maybe newer decoders are faster at this. What happens if you have
some app running making noise all the time. You could try something like
http://github.com/downloads/jonshea/Noisy/Noisy.zip
which makes white/pink/brown noise, and turn the volume way down.

I have a new Apple TV four. When Apple TV is connected via HDMI to our TV
set and the audio goes to the TV speakers, which are awful, there is no problem
with voiceover. When the sound bar that we have is connected to the TV via
digital optical cable, and there is audio coming through it on a more or less
steady basis, such as when playing the TV show or something from Apple Music,
and you Errol around or use the remote and here voiceover, there is also no
problem. It does not cut out. When, however, there is no audio except for
voiceover, there is a cut out problem. You can use the remote or arrow around
with a Bluetooth keyboard, and the first several syllables or words are missed.
So there is some kind of delay happening somewhere apparently within the sound
bar, which causes the first few syllables of voiceover to be missed when audio
isn't already being played. I hope that made sense. I had this problem before
with a second generation TV and surround sound system, where things were going
through an AV receiver and the same problem happened. What is it with this
audio cut out thing? How are people getting around this? My sound bar is
klipsch, supposed to be a good one. We try this on a different older TV, and
the same thing happen. So it's not something with our TV outputs. I would say
it is the sound bar, except I had the same problem before I'll be at with an
older AppleTV.
