Hi Tracey,

I fully agree about performance of the mac books, as for the mac minis
I’ve got a 2012 device but I’d have to be forced I think to get the new ones as
they don’t have any way now of allowing us to update or upgrade things such as
ram or harddrives,

They’ve started making them like the other devices where it has to be built in
house

But still a bloody good little device.

I wanted to reiterate something here. I’ve had my MBA since Summer 2011.
Nearly 5 years and it’s performance feels no different from the day I started
it up. This continues to amaze me. Four or five years into my Windows laptop,
I was itching for a new one, because it just felt sluggish and out of date.

As another side note, the Mac Mini has been tempting me for years. It grabs me
more than buying an iMac.

Chris, with all this discussion I don’t want you to get the idea the macbook
pro is a big boat anchor or anything. The new 13 and 15 inch Macbook Pro
retina laptops are very light for what you get. It’s all SSD now so there’s no
heavy hard drive and the battery is built in and light. The air is just super
thin and really stylish but both are great and very portable.

Thanks Simon,
I am leaning to the 13 inch macbook pro. I do not care much about weight,
since I rarely carry my laptops around, probably two or three times a year at
best.
Cheers,
Cris

Hi Chris,

Welcome to the world of Mac and Apple.

Your first statement about wanting a machine that will last you years without
becoming obsolete, well that’s any mac book you get really so long as you look
after it!

I’m using a mid 2013 mac book air which I had custom built with 8 gig ram, and
512 gb SSD, with I7 processor,
With an apple warrenty extended to 3 years It cost me new zealdn dollars
2800.00.

And I run windows 10 on it via bootcamp
It’s just as fast as my mac mini server which is also custom built with highest
specs available at the time it was purchased in 2014.

The mac book air is to me the best value for money as it gives you higher specs
for processor ram and SSD drive than the 12inch mac book

But there is available I believe a 13inch mac book pro with optical drive 500GB
drive and 4GB ram
This is the older style so thicker and heavier but you can put up to 16 gb
ram, and increase the harddrive size or make it ssd if you have the need to do
so,
I did this myself to one at the start of last year and it’s going great and
apart from weight it’s running quicker than my air with a 480gb ssd and 16gb
ram and I5 processor.

Really it comes down to what you wish to spend and custom build is a great
option because you can future proof to your best abilities out of factory, you
can’t change anything once you have the machine in your hands unless it’s the
13inch with Optical drive.

Good luck finding your new toy.

Hello Folks,
I have never used the OSX system before. I have always been a windows user.
However, now is the time for me to buy a new laptop. I decided to give the
apple mac a try.
I do not know what apple laptop to buy. I am looking for a machine powerful
enough to keep for a number of years without getting obsolete so fast. But I
do not want it to be outrageously expensive either. I also want it to have
enough ram and storage to support the installation of windows to use during the
transition period. I also want it to be fast enough, not to drive me crazy each
time I browse the web.
Any recommendations will be appreciated.
Regards,
Cris
