Are you trying FAT or FAT32? FAT32 is the method I believe you should use. I’m out of my element here so take with appropriate grains of salt.

Well, I've now had this same problem with another card, and with both cards in two different adapters. This is almost certainly software, and not a problem with the cards or readers. Micro SD cards don't have write protection switches, and the one reader I have is USB and so also lacks a switch. I'm not sure what else to try. I'm trying to format them as MS-Dos (FAT), and if I expand the details of the failure, I see that it failed to modify the partition map, whatever that means.
