Hi Anouk,

I think the basic problem is that Apple doesn't provide a way to
separately redirect the output by application in its core audio
setup. There have been workarounds -- Soundflower, Jack Pilot, and
Plogue Bidule -- all of which you will find described under keywords
such as audio routing software. Soundflower is an early version of
this; it was written by Cycling 74 so they could route audio output
from other applications to their audio processing applications by
allowing Soundflower to be selected as the "default device" in the
Audio/MIDI setup utilities for programs (like iTunes) that do not
allow for selection of a specific device, and so has come to be widely
used by podcasters. Rogue Amoeba includes Soundflower as a freebie
with their Audio Hijack Pro, and other software distributions. Most
of these programs are designed to send audio outputs as inputs to
other audio programs, but might also reroute to different devices.

Ambrosia Software came out with WireTap Anywhere, which allows for
multiple virtual reconnections:

<begin quote>
Overview: WireTap Anywhere provides you with a professional virtual
audio patchbay for your Macintosh. Any program on your computer that
generates audio can show up as a virtual audio input device, allowing
you to record or process it in any other application that works with
audio. For instance, you could record both sides of a Skype or iChat
conversation directly into Peak for editing... or go the other way,
and pipe the audio output of ProTools over Skype or iChat for a friend
to listen to. With WireTap Anywhere, your applications are instantly
transformed into audio inputs. Record the audio output of any
application from within your favorite audio application. Tap your
audio -- anytime, anyplace, anywhere.

<end quote>

This is somewhat expensive ($129), since it also includes features
like an editor and live preview, and I'm not sure how accessible it
is. I think the basic difference between WireTap Anywhere (and its
less expensive counterpart, WireTap Studio $69) and the way that Audio
Hijack Pro works is that you would have to hijack your audio sources
separately and sequentially in Audio Hijack Pro. (I'm not expert in
these programs, so someone may correct me). Also, for many uses of
this audio redirection that are of interest -- e.g. real-time music
mixing from multiple sources, rather than simply redirecting outputs
to different devices, issues like low latency become major factors;
having some music sources lag others would not be acceptable for
performance. This is a major concern for some audio redirection
efforts like JackOS X (a free download in version 0.84 available from
MacUpdate at:
http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/16162/jackosx
but this is the Jack project ported from linux and mainly intended to
answer the musician's request of sending many audio inputs to a single
hardware device.)

I think what you want can probably done, but not in the existing Mac
core audio structure framework. You might be able to get a third-
party audio redirection software solution to work. Basically, even
pass-through monitoring of audio isn't supported by default in Mac's
core audio, although several audio software programs have this
feature. For example, when one list member wanted suggestions on how
to record iPod performance for a podcast, I suggested getting the Line-
In program from Rogue Amoeba's freebies download so the output of an
iPod connected to a computer's line-in port could be played directly
on the speakers without using a sound editing program to achieve
simple pass-through.

Maybe someone else will have better suggestions. My experience with
the Wiretap software is that it's somewhat accessible, but might be
better, and so I don't know how programs like Wiretap Anywhere might
work. I think they have trial downloads, though.

Cheers,

Esther
