OK Mike, Launchpad is an app which makes all the apps on your mac appear in a icon grid view. Basically, it makes the apps on your system appear as if you were looking at an iOS home screen. And yes, it is accessible. You either arrow to, or use first letter navigation to find the item you're looking for, then when focussed on it, you can just hit return to launch the app.
