I used to be a big fan of using multiple voices for various categories within
the Speech pane of VoiceOver preferences. At a certain point, things got kind
of screwy and I stopped using that option and just kept everything set to Alex.
I recently, perhaps hastily, upgraded to El Capitan right before going on
vacation, which was probably not a brilliant move. Anyway, I figured I’d
revisit the multiple voice thing. I noticed a day or two later that VoiceOver
would stop, or at least, I heard no voice. It happened a few times and all I
could do was force shut down the computer. I finally realized that the voice
would cut out right when either an attribute changed or a link was encountered
which meant that a different voice was a bout to be triggered. I was using at
least one third-party voice from Cepstral among the voices. I have a feeling it
could be a potential conflict. I’ve switched off additional voice options for
the time-being and, so far, so good. Just thought I’d mention it for the sake
of others.
