I would like to see better support for existing Braille code now. Changes like this take forever to trickle down to every day life as it is. This is what we need to keep the pressure on Apple for.

On the other hand, I think I saw mention of a multiline braille display that
uses liquid to create dots. I am curious how well that would work, and wonder
if and how standard Screen Readers would handle the ability to have non-linear
braille output.

Hi Jonathan,

Wow! You've done some serious research. Thank you.

About an hour or so, ago, I received a message from Freedom stating that they
are researching this issue and will have some information for me, shortly.

Again, given that UEB has been in effect around the world for years, I find it
difficult to believe that this is still an issue.

Something just doesn't make sense to me.

Think about it, having a refreshable Braille device properly display type form
indicators, grade indicators, or even, capital passage indicators is among the
most basic elements of UEB.

How can the NFB, AFB, or (insert name of Braille entity) not have addressed
this?

I swear, I think I am in the middle of the Twilight Zone. I keep expecting to
wake up at any moment (smile).

Well, liblouie 3.0..0 just came out with better support for UEB appearing to be
the main difference from the 2.6 releases that have been available for a while.
I understand that FS uses liblouie for its translation, so perhaps this update
is what was needed for attributes to appear on the Windows side.

For Macintosh my sleuthing appears to indicate that they are using the Dux
service.

In 10.11.5 there is the following file in the OS:
Duxbury: Mach-O universal binary with 2 architectures
/System/Library/ScreenReader/BrailleTables/Duxbury.brailletable/Contents/MacOS/Duxbury
 (for architecture i386): Mach-O bundle i386
/System/Library/ScreenReader/BrailleTables/Duxbury.brailletable/Contents/MacOS/Duxbury
 (for architecture x86_64): Mach-O 64-bit bundle x86_64

I kinda wish I had found liblouie there, but in any case, we can look at the
capabilities of the underlying translator as the most we can expect out of a
specific screen reader.

Best wishes,

Jonathan

Sorry to say, but no displays and no screen readers are currently
supporting the format indicators as far as I'm aware. Quite
disappointing indeed!

Hello Caitlyn,

Yes, I have tried almost every configuration I can think of,

Do you have status cells turned on? I am thinking that you have to
set this up in the braille options of the vo utility on the mac. Not
sure about windows…

Quite Correct, E.T.

So far, I cannot get type form indicators to appear on the display
on either the Mac or via Jaws in Windows 10. The U, E, B,
contractions and so forth appear correctly but I want to see the
bold, italic, etc indicators, also.

I'm going to put in a call to Freedom Scientific, tomorrow.
Hopefully, they can clue me in on how to accomplish this.

If a braille display is connected to the Mac to be used as a
display, it will rely on the Mac for translation. In other words, it
matters not how the Focus is set up.

Mark,

Did you change a setting on the Focus or on the VoiceOVer braille
settings?

I did find the binary that does braille translation for the
Macintosh appears to be based on Duxberry if that makes any
difference. FS appears to have moved to LibLouis for their Braille translation
in UEB.
