There is only one mac book now that can have the ram or hard drive upgraded by the user rather than a custom built machine. That is the 13 inch mac book pro with the optical drive (DVD) This is an older style machine with I believe by default a 500 GB harddrive and i5 2.5 GHz processor and I think 4 gig of ram by default. These are about twice the thickness of the now mac book pros but they can have the retina display added to them also. The only other machnine that ram can be put in to by the user is the 27 inch iMac which has a small flap at the back which can be opened to access the ram. Everything else now including the mac mini are sealed with things soldered to the main board. Hope that helps.
